Lucy Margaux

Basket Range, Adelaide Hills, SA

Lucy Margaux is the long-running, boundary-pushing project of Anton van Klopper, based in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia, founded on a simple but radical idea: to make living wines that are unfiltered expressions of vineyard, season, and instinct. Since its beginnings in the late 2000s, the label has built a reputation for highly individual, often experimental bottlings; made from a wide range of varieties including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay, Savagnin, Riesling, and many field blends sourced from organically farmed or wild-managed sites.

Anton’s approach is deliberately hands-off in the winery, working with wild fermentations, no additions, minimal or no sulphur, and extended élevage across a mix of old barrels, amphora, and alternative vessels, allowing each wine to evolve on its own terms. Early vintages were made in extremely small quantities, often as side projects or collaborations, but over time Lucy Margaux developed into a distinct voice in Australian natural wine, known for expression, energy, and texture rather than polish or uniformity.

The work is deeply tied to a philosophy of farming-first winemaking, with increasing focus on vineyard stewardship, old vines, and sites that can carry the looseness of the cellar approach

without losing identity. Over the years Anton has also worked closely with a small network of growers across the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, and beyond, seeking fruit that can withstand minimal intervention while still delivering structure and detail. Today, Lucy Margaux remains intentionally fluid rather than fixed - shifting blends, evolving techniques, and wines that prioritise immediacy and expression over consistency; each release reflecting a snapshot of place, time, and the ongoing pursuit of purity through restraint.
