Nestled in the tiny village of Mesnay, on the edge of Arbois in France's Jura, Domaine Hughes Béguet represents a return to a slower, more thoughtful way of growing and making wine.
Jura-born Patrice Hughes Béguet left home to build a career as an IT consultant in Paris before studying winemaking in Beaune and returning to his native region with his wife, Caroline, in 2009. Their ambition was simple: to farm in harmony with nature rather than against it. Today they cultivate just over four hectares of vines across Arbois and Pupillin, where vineyards weave between forests, limestone escarpments, orchards and pasture instead of dominating the landscape. This deep connection to place defines everything they do.
Certified organic and biodynamic (Demeter), the vineyards are farmed without synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers. Native grasses, wildflowers and insects flourish between the rows, creating a thriving ecosystem rather than a monoculture. Patrice often speaks of farming not only for the vines, but for his family, neighbours and future generations. Compost preparations, herbal infusions and careful observation replace chemical inputs, allowing Jura's limestone and marl soils to express themselves with remarkable clarity.
The same restraint carries through to the cellar. Fermentations begin spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, sulphur is omitted entirely, and the wines are neither fined nor filtered. Rather than manipulating wines into a preconceived style, each cuvée is allowed to evolve at its own pace. Patrice frequently favours extended macerations to build texture and complexity over extraction, resulting in wines that are vibrant, layered and full of life.
Music also runs through the domaine. A passionate jazz enthusiast and trombone player, Patrice names many of his cuvées after favourite compositions, reflecting the same spirit of improvisation that guides his winemaking. Even the labels honour family history, drawing on an early twentieth-century lithograph once used by his grandfather, who held a licence to distil traditional Jura gentian spirit. These small, deeply personal details make Hughes Béguet feel less like a winery and more like an extension of the people behind it.

Working with organically and biodynamically farmed fruit sourced from trusted growers across Alsace, the Loire, Ventoux and Jura, the range gives him the freedom to experiment beyond the boundaries of appellation.
